We kindly invite you to the opening entitled "STYRIADNE-MARK. Following the traces of common history: postcards of historical Lower Styria (1890–1920)".
The exhibition presents postcards in a unique way, as they no longer only serve the role of communicating holiday impressions, but are also carriers of history. Postcards were an everyday communication medium used by the majority of the population of that time, therefore they also offer a view "from below", or the view of the simple, "little" people of that time.
Since 2016, a project team from the University of Graz (Karin Almasy, Eva Tropper, Jernej Kosi, Martin Sauerbrey and Bianca Sieberer under the project leadership of Heinrich Pfandl) has examined several thousand historical postcards from the period between 1890 and 1920, which were sent in the area of historical Lower Styria.
It is a project financially supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and has transcended national borders, as both Slovenian and Austrian institutions and collectors participate in it. The authors present the results of their many years of research to the public with an exhibition and a catalogue of the same name under the title "STÄJER-MARK. Following the traces of a common history: postcards of historical Lower Styria (1890–1920)".
The exhibition will be on view on the 2nd floor until May 31, 2019.
The cultural program of the opening will be enriched by a group of singers from the Celje-Center Gymnasium and the Štangarji boys' vocal quartet from the Žalec Music School.
After the opening of the exhibition, we will move to the Levstik Hall, where we will listen to the lecture ""Somewhere here, my life is happening!' What we can learn from postcards from Lower Styria from the period between 1890 and 1920". Mag. Dr. Karin Almasy from the University of Graz.
The event is being prepared in collaboration with the University of Graz, the Celje Historical Society, the Celje-Center Gymnasium and the Žalec Music School.
