The diary of Eneja Kobal guides us through the meanders of a serious adolescent illness, which originated from a seemingly innocent concern for a healthy diet, but soon grew into an all-encompassing obsession with controlling food and the number on the scale. The young girl struggled with a desire for recovery and a desire for control, in which, through various ups and downs, her sincere desire for a healthy attitude towards food and life won. She was supported by her parents, teachers, friends and health workers, and in the most difficult moments, especially her dog Tess. The diary entries, which cover four years, testify to the incredible strength of spirit and the extraordinary courage of the girl, who overcame anorexia with great will.
The young writer Eneja Kobal began writing her diary entries even before her illness, during a time of inner turmoil, when her life was marked by difficult moments: the death of both her elderly fathers, the loss of her beloved dog Urs, and coping with grief. The author poured all this grief into her diary, in which she confides to the reader that neither the arrival of her new puppy Tes nor the friendship with her best friends could always be a counterweight to this grief. She began to feel a desire to control her food; initially, the desire for healthy quantities and healthy food choices gradually grew into obsessive weighing and feelings of satisfaction with a lower number on the scale. Those around her quickly noticed changes in her emotional and physical state, and for the young girl, a very tiring and exhausting period of struggle began between the voice of reason and the environment, which wanted to help her in her distress, and the inner voice, which dictated that she give up food. She called her diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, which the doctors gave her, The Monster. In her diary entries, she describes with great honesty her coexistence with The Monster, which slowly takes away everything beautiful from her and which forces her to go to Ljubljana for treatment. But with immense will and courage, and the unconditional support of her family, friends and health workers, Eneja manages to do what many girls in a similar situation unfortunately do not: overcome difficulties, manage the disease and find meaning in life again.
The present diary entries are a rich and valuable document of the struggle with this increasingly common disease of modern times. The honest story and view of anorexia through the eyes of a young girl represent an invaluable source of information for all who have found themselves in the grip of eating disorders.
