Lara is almost thirteen years old, in eighth grade (because she skipped seventh!) and loves numbers, piano and Garfield. As a child of divorced parents, she lives a kind of double life. One week in Vrhnika, the other in Ljubljana. Half the time in a small apartment with her mother, who is struggling with financial hardship, and the other with her wealthy but aggressive father. Because of this, Lara faces feelings of anxiety, but it is not until a blue envelope shakes her world so much that she decides to take action. Her path then fatally intertwines with the lives of a group of refugees near the Slovenian-Croatian border. All this takes place in 2015, when the future of many people, like Lara, is dangerously uncertain.

Don't be afraid, Lara! is a story about being trapped, escaping, and finding a solution. It's also a story about youth, hope, and new opportunities, a story that Lara tells us honestly, intelligently, humorously, and always with sensitivity.
