In 1923 London, dragons are flying in the sky, and the city is in turmoil. The truce between humans and dragons is no longer as firm and reliable as it seemed, as protests against the Peace Treaty grow louder. But Vivien Featherswallow is not disturbed by political intrigue, as she has clear goals in front of her: to respect all the rules, secure a place at the prestigious Academy of Dragon Linguistics, and provide for her younger sister's future. But when her life is turned upside down on one fateful evening, a series of unfortunate events ignites a civil war.
Vivien seems to be losing her footing, her parents are in prison, and she is forced to leave her younger sister behind. Everything she has worked for her whole life is disappearing before her eyes. When she is offered a lifeline in the form of a mysterious assignment, where her extensive knowledge of dragon and human languages will be crucial, she heads to Bletchley Park. There she discovers that she has been recruited as a codebreaker - if she completes her assignment, her family will be safe. If she fails, they will all be doomed.
Unraveling the secrets of dragon language seems like a doable task at first. But the more she learns, the more she realizes that revealing some secrets is dangerous, as they are not meant for humans - and the dragons will do anything to stop them. Ultimately, Viv must decide whose war she is fighting and whose side she is on.
