While his mother is in the hospital, eleven-year-old Rio is forced to travel to California to stay with his grandmother, whom he barely knows. All he wants is for his mother to recover quickly so he can return home. But everything changes one day when he goes whale watching and meets White-Beaked, a friendly female gray whale. Rio and the whale form an instant friendship, and for the first time in a long time, the boy feels a spark of hope.

But White Beak goes missing, and Rio may be the only one who can help. Is their unusual bond strong enough for the boy to find and save the whale?
