“On the Trail” is the second novel in the new historical saga The Fiery Three by Igor Karlovšek, known, among other things, for his collection The Fiery Tribe. The suspenseful adventure novel takes place during the settlement of the Slavs in the area of present-day Slovenia, before the formation of the Samoan tribal union and the principality of Carantania. Historical facts (the novel is also accompanied by a foreword by historian Miha Pohar) intertwine with a story about growing up, (first) love, finding one's place in the world, and the struggle for survival.
In the first part of the saga The Fiery Three: Exile, the triplets Vuk, Vlad and Plamen tasted youthful love. But both nature and people, united in tribes, sometimes provide refuge, and at other times show their teeth. Živa, Plamen's love, ended up in an abyss, and Zora, who had become close to Vlad, was kidnapped by the Bavarians. In the second part of the saga, Vuk, Vlad and Plamen set out on Zora's trail, but in the process become entangled in new inter-tribal conflicts. Živa tries to survive another relentless winter high in the mountains. Throughout, we follow the struggle for survival, in the midst of which the life thread of any of our heroes can be broken.
