Marija Sreš is a Prekmurka woman who went to Gujarat, India, as a missionary in 1971, where she wanted to work with rural women. She learned the Gujarati language and worked with the indigenous women there for almost four decades. Her work was not about Christianizing, but about helping women and families navigate their lives with dignity.
During this time, she gained a thorough understanding of Indian society and its characteristics, which she skillfully presents to us in her stories. We also recognize the perspective of a progressive woman who is loyal to the Catholic Church with her heart and faith, but is able to express sharp criticism. Twenty short stories show the problems faced by women from the East and the West - from partnerships and parenthood to work and earning a living.
For the past seven years, Marija has been living in Slovenia again, and she is still an inspiration to those she lived and worked with, and supports them from afar, as she cares about their economic independence, self-confidence, and dignity.
