Ten years ago, Erica Johnson Debeljak, an American by birth, visited the Kras and Tomaj, the birthplace of the poet Srečko Kosovel, for the first time in her life. On the 90th anniversary of his birth, she came across a photograph of the poet, which completely captivated her. Since then, Debeljak has intensively researched Kosovel and this year published an interesting and enjoyable book, Srečko Kosovel – Poet and Me. The work is written in the form of diary reflections, supplemented by excerpts from the poet’s letters and poems. She connects the intellectual depths of the poetry of the “great seeker of truth” with her knowledge and experience of the Kras. She stops to consider the poet’s childhood, growing up, and schooling. She reflects on his letters to Fanica Obidova, which express a longing for love and repeatedly return to the question of the meaning of life.
