The City Municipality of Celje received an exceptional recognition in 2025: UNESCO has named Celje a new creative city of literature and thus included it in the global UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Celje has thus joined 408 cities from more than 100 countries that contribute to sustainable development with their creative industries and cultural life.
Celje is also internationally recognized as a city that exceptionally cherishes literary tradition, reading culture and creativity, and encourages the integration of literature into everyday life - from a rich library network and literary festivals to numerous projects that connect books, art and education. Joining the Creative Cities is a natural extension of the numerous successful projects and partnerships that Celje is already developing with cities around the world in the fields of culture, education, sustainable development and youth. This prestigious membership also enables active involvement in UNESCO projects, which brings numerous opportunities in the field of cultural tourism and the promotion of the city's rich cultural heritage.
The Celje Central Library plays a key role in Celje's operation as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, as it acts as a central hub for literary creation, reading culture and international cooperation. With its programs and services, it promotes access to literature, the development of reading literacy and fosters lifelong learning. The Celje Central Library also actively connects the local community, organizes events, festivals and residencies, and thus significantly contributes to the recognition of Celje as a city of literature at home and abroad.
