The travelogue lecture takes us to the island of Santiago in Cape Verde, the only country in Macaronesia to have achieved independence. Santiago has a distinct African character and is one of the few islands in the country where mass tourism is almost non-existent, and people often still live in a traditional way. It is characterized by high mountains, a great diversity of vegetation, and sandy beaches where turtles nest. Along with personal travel impressions, we will use a geographical approach to shed light on the characteristics of all ten islands that make up the archipelago. The historical perspective will open up the colonial and violent past, while the socio-political context will serve to understand the daily life of the inhabitants today. We will also mention the famous singer Cesaria Evora, talk about the challenges of organizing a trip, and add a funny story from the trip.
