You are invited to the seventh in the series of lectures Can we still do anything with philosophy today, entitled The Question of the Subject, or Am I Someone Else?
Understanding the subject has an important place in philosophy; from the denial of individuality in pre-modern times, to the Enlightenment emphasis on individual responsibility for the general social benefit and development. Descartes' Cogito (the thinking Self) defined the further strategy of European philosophical development for almost three hundred years, but not for all time. According to S. Žižek, Descartes is one of the three key philosophers (along with Plato and Hegel) who moved the boundaries of European philosophy.

The question of the subject is one of the key themes of Western thought. How great are the changes in relation to the simple statement "I think"? How to understand the loss of the identity of the subject?

Key topics:

– Descartes' Cogito and the Placement of His Philosophy in Modern Thought

– Nietzsche, one of the first thinkers to question Descartes' concept of the subject

– Discoveries of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud as a philosopher

– J. Lacan; imaginary, symbolic and real

– S. Žižek
