The exhibition shows the development of geodesy and surveying in Slovenia from the Austro-Hungarian period onwards, including the work of Janez Vajkard Valvazor.

The exhibition is owned by the Technological Museum of Slovenia. Geodesy is a science that deals with the measurement and presentation of the Earth and its surface on plans and maps. It is indispensable in technical work such as staking out buildings, routing roads and railways, urbanization and spatial management, etc. Slovenia is one of the few European countries that has had an independent museum presentation of geodesy in Slovenia since 1987; the Slovenian Geodetic Collection has been on display to visitors to Bogenšperk Castle for more than three decades. In 2021, the collection was moved and, in designing the present exhibition, we collaborated with the Geodetic Administration of the Republic of Slovenia and the Association of Surveyors of Slovenia, with whom we set up the collection years ago, and also invited the Department of Geodesy of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of the University of Ljubljana to participate.

The result of the collaboration is a transparent, attractive and educational exhibition Every millimeter counts, which chronologically presents the main developmental milestones of geodesy and explains the concepts related to geodesy and cartography. It walks through the two-hundred-year history of the land cadastre in Slovenia and shows the use of geodesy in practice. In our everyday lives, we need it in construction, engineering, surveying, remote sensing, in agriculture, research and study of cultural heritage and, last but not least, in the army. The development of education in the field of geodesy and the digital transformation of the real estate cadastre is presented. The importance of the 17th-century Carniolan scholar Valvasor in the field of cartography is presented with an ambient display. The exhibition consists of several panels, more than 20 geodetic instruments and other museum objects are exhibited in display cases, and it also includes multimedia displays and a 3D interactive presentation of the contents. In order to bring geodesy and its professional terminology closer to visitors, the authors of the exhibition have also created a glossary that also addresses a younger audience with interesting illustrations.
