Celje poets will on Friday, March 18, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the Dance Forum Celje paid tribute to World Poetry Day with a bilingual Slovenian-American poetry evening, titled with a verse by American poet Jack Spicer: A poet is a time mechanic not an embalmer.

The main guest of the evening will be an American poet Brynne Rebele-Henry, who is currently studying at the ZRC SAZU in Ljubljana as a Fulbright scholar. She published her debut poetry collection Fleshgraphs in 2016 at the age of 16, and her novel Orpheus girl in 2019. She has received numerous literary awards, including the AWP Donald Hall Prize for her second poetry collection Autobiography of a Wound. A selection of her poetry in Slovenian translation was published in 2018 as part of the Days of Poetry and Wine festival under the title Visions Begin at Sixteen. Her works address issues of girlhood, same-sex relationships, and homophobic violence.

The evening will also feature Celje poets of all generations – from high school students, for whom Brynne will also conduct an intensive creative writing workshop at Celje-Center Gymnasium on March 18th and 19th, to established and award-winning Celje poets. They will perform Zoran Pevec, Katja Gorečan, Robert Simonišek, Alenka Jovanovski, Muanis Sinanović, Marija Kisilak, Lara Gobec, Aljaž Primožič and others.

The event will be enriched with music by young people from Celje-Center High School.

The event will be hosted by poet and educator Kristian Koželj.

We are organizing the event Sayings Festival, Celje-Center Gymnasium and Celje Central Library under the auspices and in collaboration with The US Embassy in Slovenia.
