The first relationship we experience and cannot choose is the relationship with our parents, which significantly influences how we experience and shape subsequent relationships in our lives. A family is much more than just a group of individuals. Relationships in a family are marked by the relationships that parents have had in their families and the relationships that they establish with their children as parents. Family ties and memories are marked not only by the current needs and expectations of members but also by the past of the family system and goals for the future.

The way we perceive ourselves and the world around us is shaped by at least three previous generations of our family. An individual cannot change their childhood experiences, but they can become more aware of their past and their experiences, thereby altering their responses and enabling change.

Understanding family development, developmental periods, stress, and the specific needs of the family system is crucial, as this allows us to better develop empathy and compassion for family members and their developmental struggles.
