September 13, 2012 – Historian, geographer and specialist librarian Branko Goropevšek, mag., born on October 18, 1966 in Celje, died in Celje.

 After successfully completing his studies, MA Branko Goropevšek, professor of history and geography and a library specialist, was employed at the Central Library of Celje in 1991 as the head of the local history department. He was appointed director of the Celje Library in 2001, a position he held until his untimely death. As the head of the local history department, he actively participated in the development of Slovenian local history throughout the years. He was also active in the field of Slovenian historiography throughout his career, as he was invited as a lecturer to several symposia (often with international participation) and professional consultations in the field of historiography. Between 1993 and 2000, he was involved in the scientific project History of Northeastern Slovenia, History 1848-1918.

 

His personal bibliography includes over 200 bibliographical units, scientific and professional articles, including six monographs. For many years, he collaborated as an entry writer with the Encyclopedia of Slovenia and the Slovenian Chronicle of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was also the editor of numerous anthologies and other professional publications. In the period 1992-1996, he chaired the Historical Society in Celje. During this period, two high-profile international symposia were prepared, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Celje High School Question (1995) and the 150th anniversary of the Southern Railway (1996), and the society also began publishing the magazine History for All.

In addition to his journalistic activities, he also participated in the youth research work Mladi za Celje every year, as a mentor and evaluator of research assignments. He was also a member of the Rotary Club Barbara Celjska.

In 2010, the Celje Central Library team, under his leadership, succeeded in moving to renovated and expanded premises.
