2October 2, 1862 – Dragotin Hribar, a long-time Celje journalist, publisher and printer, was born in Ljubljana. He died on September 10, 1935 in Ljubljana.
After primary school in Ljubljana, Dragotin Hribar attended a trade school and then a higher commercial school in Vienna. After completing his studies, he returned to Ljubljana and learned printing from the famous printer Blaznik. He became an assistant, and in 1887 he actively entered the world of journalism, taking over the responsible editorial position of the Slovenski narodowa and becoming the manager of the National Printing House.
In 1890 he moved to Celje, where a year later he established his own printing house with a book and paper shop. His arrival in Celje was of great importance for the cultural and political work of the Celje Slovenes. Numerous books in Slovenian began to be published in his printing house, and in 1891 he also began publishing Domovina, a political newspaper for the Slovenes of Lower Styria, and every year the popular Illustrated National Calendar.
The printed word from his printing house helped Lower Styria in the fight against increasingly aggressive Germanization during the period of the worst Slovenian-German national conflicts. Hribar himself established himself as a speaker at political rallies, especially as a representative of the national defense Society of St. Cyril and Methodius.
Due to disagreements with the Celje Slovenes, he returned to Ljubljana in 1902 and turned to entrepreneurship. After World War I, he became president of the Kranjska hranilnica, and we also find him among the founders of the Association of Industrialists and on the administrative and supervisory boards of several Slovenian companies.
