January 30, 1819 – Ignac Orožen, historian, chronicler and author of the famous Celje Chronicle, was born in Laško. He died on April 13, 1900 in Maribor.
Historian, cathedral dean and apostolic protonotary Ignacij Orožen was the son of Ignacij Orožen, a merchant and merchant from Laško, and Marija née Ramšak. After high school in Celje, he studied philosophy in Graz, theology in Klagenfurt and was ordained in 1842. He was a chaplain in Žalec and Celje, a parish priest in Mozirje, an archpriest at the Holy Cross in Rogaška Slatina, and in Maribor, a cathedral canon, cathedral dean and cathedral prothonotary. He was a diocesan school supervisor, principal of the seminary, and lectured at the theological teacher training college on ecclesiastical art. He was a member of the Styrian provincial school council and director of the ordinariate office. In 1891, the Pope appointed him apostolic protonotary.
Ignacij Orožen is one of the prominent Slovenian historians. He kept parish chronicles in the places where he served and was interested in artistic and historical monuments. In Celje, he had 16 Roman monuments built into the wall of the parish church. In Maribor, he prevented the demolition of the cathedral. While searching for historical information about Jurklošter, he met the curator of the numismatic and antique cabinet, Wartinger, in the Joanneum in Graz. He encouraged him to pursue historical work and remained his mentor until his death. Orožen also collaborated with other experts from Graz: the expert in epigraphy and numismatics, Knabl, the provincial conservator, Graus, and the director of the archive, Zahn. All of the above encouraged Orožen to refute his initial misgivings and begin writing historical contributions.
Orožen's first historical work, "The Celje Chronicle", contains a strict chronicle with insufficient citation of sources, phenomena from national life, references to Celje bishops, parish priests, vicars, chaplains, a directory of priests born in Celje, a list of Celje district governors, judges, mayors, and inscriptions on old Roman monuments. Orožen later added two shorter treatises to the last topic.
