July 1, 1848 – Celjske slovensko novine, the first Slovenian newspaper in the city on the Savinja River, began to be published.
The beginnings of Slovenian journalism in Styria can be dated back to 1848, when the peaceful life in the Savinja Valley was interrupted by news of revolutionary events in Vienna. In Celje, on July 1 of that year, high school professor Valentin Konšek began publishing the first Slovenian political newspaper, Celjske slovenške novine. The basic editorial concept was primarily to inform Slovenians in Celje and the surrounding area about current political events, which was also stated in the editorial of the first issue.
He says this:
"All Slovenes are reading, why should we in the Celje Circle remain silent! We also want to discuss what is necessary and useful for us, and tell each other what we hear from distant places. We especially want to explain to you in the named newspapers how your deputies and lieutenants in Vienna are praising you. You will also quickly learn from us everything that will be concluded in Vienna."
