The novel is written in the form of a first-person narrative/confession by a high school student, Ada, who is struck by tragedy one Tuesday. Ada comes from an orderly but somewhat cold family – the girl feels that her parents are self-sufficient and are only fulfilling their parental duties towards their daughters. She has a warm relationship with her younger sister, although she is her opposite – carefree and sociable, everything is easy for her. In contrast, Ada is excessively worried, and as a top violinist, she has no time for socializing. The language closest to her is music and her instrument, which in elementary school soon becomes the basis for teasing among her peers. In high school, she does better in this regard, but everything really changes only when Majk, a karate player and guitarist, is with whom she is able to live a slightly different life. Until one day he leaves, and Ada is left alone again. Alone with a multitude of questions, a sense of guilt and violent emotions that fluctuate from sadness to anger. Why, why, why? Through the narrative, their (extremely beautiful) love story slowly unfolds before the reader, as well as their life stories before it, including Majko's psychological problems. The Ballad of the Tree is a poignant, extremely powerful book about coping with loss, trying to accept the unacceptable and understand the incomprehensible.
