Luke and his older brother Ben spend their summer on the banks of Cobbage Tree Creek. Quiet Luke sketches birds while Ben jumps from a jumping tree. The two boys are as different as night and day, but they share the same dream: they want to win a boat in a contest so they can explore the strait. Then Ben starts high school and the boys grow estranged. When Luke catches Ben sneaking away from home in the middle of the night, he knows he's up to something.
