Publisher about the book:

With an intimate postcard of pre-war Paris, the author returns to the time of his studies at the Sorbonne in 1938/39. Knitted Armchairs (1963) belongs to Tatarka's more mature period and is his central work, a reflective-philosophical prose with the central motif of confidential love between a Slovak student and a Frenchwoman, Daniela. They are the apotheosis of love that stirs all human senses, but remains a consciously constructed, knitted relationship based on respect. The highly poetically written novel is full of self-irony, and at the same time, it is home to the idea of coexistence between Western and Eastern European cultures and characters symbolized by living in a boarding house, the European Union in miniature, half a century ahead of its time.
