The Handbook for a Good Life by Olivera Zulović is a youth novel that appeals to both young people and adults and tells a moving story about two teenagers, Ljubo and Ljubica, who face profound personal and family challenges.

Their families are going through a period of difficult trials – Ljubo witnesses the divorce of her parents, who can no longer find a common language, and Ljubica is dealing with the loss of her mother, who died of illness. Through their friendship, based on observing their neighbors through binoculars, they create their own world in which they become the heroes of their lives.
The story takes us into their childhood perspective, where simple binoculars become a window into the lives of other, seemingly perfect families. Through their observations, they discover that everyone carries their own secrets and pain. In doing so, they also face their own challenges of growing up and unpleasant truths about the adult world.
