Article 353 of the Penal Code is a bitter, minimalist novel laced with black humor, which takes place in a dialogue between Martial Kermeur and the judge. Through a first-person narrative, we learn the reasons for the criminal act committed by the novel's protagonist.

Kermeur, the caretaker of the city's castle park, becomes, along with his fellow citizens, a victim of the fraud of newcomer Antoine Lazanec, a capitalist investor who promised the residents of Brest a bright future, new buildings, a swimming pool complex, and a boom in tourism.  The townspeople, led by the mayor himself, invest in high-flying plans, while Lazanec never finishes the construction work and quietly collects the money, which drives the mayor to suicide due to his guilt over being responsible for the city's bankruptcy. Due to the fraud, Kermeur takes the reins into his own hands and together with Lazanec takes a boat to the open sea, but returns alone.
