The main characters of the novel are Aleš and Zala, a young couple of architects. On their walks, they get to know their hometown, its streets, squares and parks, and of course, the buildings. Their favorite walks are around Vrtača, where they look at houses not only as architects, but also as young people eager for life, as a couple in love who want to continue their lives under one roof. Unfortunately, their wish seems unattainable, as they both have low-paid jobs. Zala unexpectedly inherits a large sum of money, which encourages them to look for a suitable apartment. They look at many properties, but they are too expensive or unsuitable for them, and on this path to independence, they also become somewhat alienated. Everything changes when Aleš notices the announcement of a public call for bids for an apartment measuring 66.3 m2 in a building in Vrtača. Aleš buys the apartment, but without Zala's knowledge. He is soon overcome with anxiety about how to explain his actions to her. Was he doing the right thing?
