The book is set between London and Guernsey, a Channel Island 70 miles off the English coast. The year is 1946, and after the success of her newly published book, writer Juliet Ashton is looking for new literary material that would appeal to her. Then, through a series of coincidences, she learns about the Guernsey Literary Society and potato peeling pie. She begins to correspond with members of the society, and the letters begin to reveal stories about the lives of the people there under German occupation. Their warmth, courage and cheerfulness of spirit attract her and lead her to decide to write a book about them, so she sets off for Guernsey, which fundamentally changes her life. A book that will make you laugh and cry, and that will tempt you to travel to Guernsey yourself.
