Incest. The word itself suggests the main theme of this provocative work, which from the beginning forces the reader to follow the story with disgust and disbelief and hope that things will not unfold according to the worst-case scenario. In vain. We are witnessing a horrific story that, unfortunately, is still happening in many places today, a good two hundred years after it was written. The main character separates his daughter from her mother at birth and raises her according to his own perverted principles. He is only allowed to see his mother rarely, and he allows her contact with the outside world only when he is absolutely sure that his daughter is already dead set on him. Despite the disgust and rage that we feel while reading, the shocking story offers beautiful, at times poetic language and is a masterpiece that is simply captivating.
