You Have to Love Someone was the title of Ivan Minatti's third poetry collection. It was published fifty years ago (1963) and became one of the most widely read and popular collections of Slovenian poetry. A new anthology of poems from his entire oeuvre, with the same title, was prepared by the poet and Minatti's wife Lojzka Špacapan a year after his verses fell silent. In her farewell to him, she wrote: "Life is like fire, burning into smoke and ashes. It is like the ringing of bells, spilled and silenced in the distant evening dawn. Time is a silent pursuer, counting down the hours and days, and although tomorrow will come another new day, one day will be the last... The poet died and, like the Little Prince, left our planet when his star was closest to the earth."
