At the center of Rugelj's new novel, The Truth Has Your Eyes (2018), is a married couple who have been married for thirty years; we meet Miha, who is about to retire, and Mija, his faithful wife, whose lives will be turned upside down at any moment. The story unfolds on two levels: the present here, in Ljubljana, where they live and where Miha will have just finished his last day of work – he is already making new plans for his retirement days – and a retrospective look at the beginning of their journey, to Istanbul, where they met and fell in love – and where, in the novel, a fateful twist in the present occurs that will completely change the future for everyone. Now Miha and Mija are grandparents and their adult son, together with his partner, travels so far away for the first time, to Istanbul – for New Year's Eve and leaves their grandson in their care… A story about loyalty, partnership, parenthood, trials, and above all about changes that do not let a person sleep through life.
