The book "The Changing Clouds" by Spanish writer Carmen Martin Gaite is worth reading for several reasons. The first is certainly that this novel is the first work translated into Slovenian by this author. The book's content conveys a great knowledge of world literature, history and art. The heroines in the novel are psychologically fragmented, and before us unfolds a life woven from countless fragments assembled into a whole. Childhood friends Mariane Leon and Sofie Montalvo meet again after many years. Mariane is an unmarried psychiatrist, and her friend Sofia is the mother of three children. Both are dissatisfied, lonely and unhappy. Through the letters they write to each other, their past and present intertwine before us. The writer has received numerous awards and prizes for her works, including the National Prize for Spanish Literature.
