Ken Follett, a world-renowned writer of genre novels, presents himself this time with a historical masterpiece. As a young man, he was fascinated by medieval architecture, which he began to study as an amateur. For him, the example of perfection was the British cathedrals. As a journalist, he once visited the town of Peterborough with its cathedral, one of the most important buildings from the 12th century. The event changed his life; after years of writing experience, he began writing the extensive Kingsbridge trilogy, the first book of which is entitled The Pillars of the Earth. As you have probably already guessed, the construction of the cathedral is at the center of the action of this historical-adventure novel. The story is set in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, and the period of events is the turbulent 12th century. England finds itself in the midst of political anarchy, the king is without offspring, and the nobles are fighting and scheming among themselves. In this vibrant scene, the life stories of three main characters intertwine: Prior Phillip, whose life mission is to build the largest Gothic cathedral in the world; the mason Tom, who finds himself in his vicinity through a series of interesting coincidences; and the noblewoman Aliena, who is trying to find a new path in life after her father's tragic death. The novel attracts the reader from the first page. Life in the Middle Ages is, of course, completely different from today, and the ways of mutual relations and communication are quite similar to those in today's society. The trilogy is Follett's most extensive literary project to date, and we can only hope that The Pillars of the Earth will be followed in Slovenian translation by The Endless World and The Pillar of Fire, with which the writer concluded the entire story of the town of Kingsbridge.
