In the novel, set before and during World War II, we follow the tragic fate of the Zarnik couple, Veronika and her husband, a wealthy industrialist Leo. The characters of both are based on the life stories of real historical figures. Veronika is a young, extravagant woman in love with art, but essentially simple and full of joy of life. Her story is told by five people: an officer in the Yugoslav Royal Army and Veronika's former lover, Veronika's mother, a doctor in the German occupation army, the Zarnik family's housekeeper, and a former partisan who, after fifty years, remembers the fateful events during the war. In the novel, the author does not define himself by the chaotic events in Slovenia during World War II; the focus of the narrative is on the personal confessions of individuals connected by thin emotional threads. A compelling and moving read.
