The book The Naked City consists of twenty short stories. They all take place in an urban environment, mostly in Ljubljana. The characters in the stories are ordinary people – not those on the fringes and certainly not those who attract media attention. And ordinary things happen to these ordinary people, which often take a surprising turn and become meaningless, bizarre or even tragic. The common thread of the stories is summarized in the title metaphor “the naked city”: it is about the emptiness that we feel when reading, but it is difficult to describe. The emptiness sneaks into old marriage beds, but also into young loves. The emptiest thing in the naked city is death. No one sees any meaning in it, but no one knows what went wrong either.
